Gulu: Business owners urged to embrace technology and mentorship programs

Businessmen and manufacturers have been urged to seize the vast technological and mentoring opportunities available to boost their businesses.

The appeal was made by the mayor of the city of Gulu, Alfred Okwonga, as he addressed business leaders at a regional meeting called to discuss the draft industrialization master plan of the ‘Uganda 2020-2040.

“We should mentor more people to do business and let them adopt the technology if they want to grow in their business,” Okwonga said.

Okwonga, who is also a prominent businessman in Gulu, added that business owners need exposure to different fields and countries in order to know how similar businesses operate in various contexts.

“The lack of exposure is killing our people who do business here. We should organize people into groups so that they can do a baseline visit to other countries and see how business is done. “

He also noted that there is a need for a systematic approach to industrialization in order to achieve Agenda 2040 with green economies in place.

Dr John Ssekamatte, technical adviser to the National Planning Authority and the Ministry of Commerce, told ChimpReports that the master plan is expected to meet four new goals, including: increase in goods, increase in the share of goods exported, increase in jobs and environmental sustainability.

Engineer Joseph Ogwal, a businessman from Lira, urged the government to reduce the cost of electricity and support them in technical fields so that they can train more people in business and small industries.

The master plan will have three phases; Agro and light development, Heavy industries and Hitech and know-how.

The government should invest in human resources to develop human capital, develop infrastructure such as roads, energy and good governance.
