Lawyers express their satisfaction with the improved conditions for legal consultation with incarcerated clients in prisons and correctional centers across the country, thanks to the 26 lawyer-inmate meeting rooms recently built in these establishments.

“In the past, before there were rooms like this available, lawyers had to meet their clients in the presence of a large number of people, which compromised confidentiality and privacy and we could not accomplish much with consultations,” attorney Lor said. Kim Ghech.

“Now it’s much easier for us to advise our clients because the Bar has had these meeting rooms built.”

Lim Chanlida, head of the legal office’s construction commission, said all 26 meeting rooms were newly built except for three in Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang and Preah Sihanouk provinces which were not built. than renovated and modernized.

She said Prey Sar prison in Phnom Penh has more rooms than those in the provinces. In the men’s section of Prey Sar there are three consultation rooms plus another room in the women’s part of the prison. And in another police-run prison in Phnom Penh, known as PJ, there are also four rooms available.

She said each room is about 5m by 6m and they were built with a budget of over $165,000 donated by lawyers, judges and prosecutors, as well as a $70,000 donation from the Prime Minister Hun Sen.

They are usually equipped with a table, five chairs, air conditioning, a fan and an attached toilet, but most importantly they offer lawyers and their clients the possibility of having private consultations, she said.

She said that the idea of ​​building these chambers for lawyers-inmates was initiated by the former president of the Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia (BAKC).

Since their completion, the rooms have been used frequently by lawyers and their clients. This saves the attorney’s time, protects the dignity and privacy of detainees, and respects their legal right to have confidential legal advice.

“They offer many advantages to lawyers and their clients, who must be able to have confidential consultations in accordance with the ethics and code of ethics of lawyers, and thus clients can place their trust in these legal consultations”, he said. she declared.
