Michael Doherty

Scottsdale – We celebrate the life of Michael Doherty who passed away May 15 at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Mike was born March 20, 1938 in Seattle Washington to Bruce and Jean Doherty. His family moved to Portland, Oregon where he attended Ainsworth Elementary School and Lincoln High School. As the football team’s quarterback, he was selected to the All State team. To this day, many of his high school records remain intact. After graduating, Mike attended Notre Dame on a football scholarship where he established a lifelong love of the Fighting Irish. Transferred to the University of Portland on a basketball scholarship, he became a Catholic College All American. The University of Portland turned out to be a very special place because it was there that he met his beloved wife Eileen. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December. After graduating, he began his hospitality career at the Multnomah Hotel in downtown Portland. Working a decade for Marriott hotels moved them around the country until he moved his family to Scottsdale, Arizona in 1975 and began his career as vice president of sales and marketing for Doubletree Hotels. As an active member of his community, he became a life member of the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors. His love for his family, his sports, his community and his Irish heritage were exemplified in all aspects of his life. Mike has blessed so many friends and family with his positive attitude, sense of humor and mentorship. He enjoyed life and family to the full and was absolutely devoted to his wife, children and granddaughters. Mike is survived by his wife Eileen, his children Denise, Erin and Patrick, his son-in-law Kevin, his granddaughters Mackenzie and Sadie, his siblings Maureen, Colleen, Tim, Dennis (Marianne), Brian (Denise), Kevin (Shelley), Kelly (Thalia) as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Bruce and Jean Doherty and his brother Pat. Services will be held at noon Friday, June 24 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 11310 N 64th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85254.
