Summer interns redefine company technology and gain real work experience
LONG BEACH, CA, USA, Sep 15, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ – Building on his successful mentoring efforts with Cal Poly Pomona and the University of California, Irvine, Ship & Shore Environmental, Inc. (S&SE ), a leading U.S. pollution reduction company, announces the completion of its 2021 summer internship program with Sage Hill High School. This collaboration is an extension of the company’s annual engineering mentorship program for students with environmental and similar STEM-related interests, originally launched in February 2019.
Several high school students were selected for summer internships in a range of learning-intensive tasks, from research to administration, including:
• Social media marketing, which involved finding relevant industry related articles and writing summaries for daily posting to H&SE social media accounts.
• Data mining, which required updating the H&S database and carrying out sector research.
• Chemical engineering, which involved the detailed capture and documentation of chemical compounds found throughout the pollution abatement industry.
One intern in particular has participated in the company’s engineering mentorship program since its inception and has spent the summer developing a redefined and more cost-effective design of the Ship & Shore Korozon misting system alongside the vice president of the Ship & Shore engineering. The mentee is now a senior student at Sage Hill High School.
“The new working prototype of the Korozon mist sterilizer system is designed to remove both surface-attached and airborne microbes through the production of aqueous and gaseous ozone,” explains the senior student. Using the company’s antimicrobial activated oxygen technology, the student designed a working prototype of the system and tested its effectiveness in two outside labs. So far all results have been positive and S&SE intends to market the finalized version under the Korozon brand.
At the end of the internship program, S&SE asked the students to write “reflections” on their experience.
“As summer approached, I had no real work experience,” wrote a sophomore from Sage Hill. “Working with Ship & Shore has given me a solid foundation and a better understanding of what it’s like to work within a company which will surely help me in the future. My task has helped me gain a better understanding of the state of the environment and the changes that need to be made to create a more sustainable economy and future of life. I would like to think that my involvement in such an organization has also made me more environmentally conscious in my daily lifestyle.
Another intern commented: “One of the most important skills I learned from this internship was the ability to quickly sift through data and organize it in an accessible way. Organizing data is always important in any field of science, and it will be very helpful for me to have more experience in organizing and processing data. One of the interesting things I learned is how many chemical compounds are considered harmful to the environment. This shows how many emissions we, as a species, need to be careful about so as not to harm the environment. “
S&SE CEO Anoosheh Oskouian has long expressed her desire to help educate today’s youth about STEM careers, environmental conditions and global best practices. This takes the form of lectures, tours of the S&SE manufacturing facility, engineering conferences held at S&SE, and much more. H&SE leadership constantly emphasizes the integrity of the workforce, helping the global community and bringing creativity to solve big problems.
“We are very happy and proud of our 2021 interns,” says Oskouian. “These students could be the backbone of tomorrow’s environmental efforts and greatest inventions. We owe it to the industry and the world to put in as much work and love as possible to help them grow into their future roles, and we look forward to seeing what the engineering internship program will bring in 2022. ”
