UT Arlington math professor shortlisted for presidential award

Minerva Cordero, a professor of mathematics at UT Arlington, is one of 12 individuals to be selected for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.

A math professor at UT Arlington has been selected by President Joe Biden to receive an award for his work as a STEM mentor at the university, according to a press release.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring has 12 recipients this year, including UTA’s Minerva Cordero.

Cordero received the award for the work she does mentoring students “outside the traditional classroom in the academic and professional development of the future scientific and technical workforce,” according to the release.

Cordero said her ability to mentor her students would not be possible without the guidance she received.

“This award would not be possible without the mentors who generously gave of their time to my professional development, guiding me on the path to many successes,” Cordero said in the statement. “I am privileged to pay for their investment and mentor many bright and talented students at UTA and in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington communities.”

Cordero was selected as a 2020 If/Then Ambassador by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the work she has done in raising academic awareness for girls and young women, according to the statement. She has also led national and local programs to facilitate access to science and math curricula.
